Droppie [infosec] 🐨:archlinux: :kde: :firefox_nightly: :thunderbird: :vegan:<p>In the wee small hours i decided to give <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/GnomeBoxes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GnomeBoxes</span></a> another chance as a possible alternative. Chose to install via <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/flatpak" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flatpak</span></a>, coz my Host is :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/KDEPlasma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>KDEPlasma</span></a> &amp; i did not wish to risk possible gnome vs plasma file conflicts. </p><p>It did a fine job of installing an <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ArchLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchLinux</span></a> VM [which i completed using the latest <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/ArchInstall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArchInstall</span></a> v3.0.3], so then in an act of gross stupidity i ridiculously chose to see if it could handle a win10 VM via a 3-yr old ISO i have lying around. As i abandoned windoze "for real" in 2014, i had forgotten the many hours of time-wasting bullshit involved, at the end of which instead of getting something decent, you just get... <em>windoze</em>, ugh. </p><p>Anyway, so far it seems that GnomeBoxes is going ok, which makes a nice change as all prior tests of older versions failed to work properly. Doubt though atm that it'll persuade me to give up on <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/qemu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>qemu</span></a> / <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/kvm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kvm</span></a> / <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/libvirt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>libvirt</span></a> / <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/VirtManager" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VirtManager</span></a>. GB has no facility to Suspend VMs, so they need to be fully shutdown, which is a drag. Also, the FP version does not support USB transfer, which is a bugger, &amp; so far i've not made <a href="https://infosec.space/tags/SharedFolders" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SharedFolders</span></a> work [but think i know why].</p>

Just discovered that Arch Linux now has an installation menu!

Gone are the days of typing every command manually—now there's archinstall, a guided installer that simplifies the setup process. You can choose partitions, desktop environments, and more with an interactive menu! 🖥️⚙️

Still the same Arch flexibility, but now way more accessible. Loving this improvement! 💙🐧

Today I installed #ArchLinux in a #VM.

I tried the #ArchInstall installer for the first time. It worked well for a quick adhoc spin up but doesn't offer some configuration things that I tend to do. There's probably ways to extend the install but I couldn't be bothered. It let me install #CosmicDE without issue so that's nice.

Ran like a scalded cat and felt snappy in the VM (Wayland, QXL). Noice. Makes me question the host (old #PopOS #Gnome #Cosmic w/ Xorg). Not scientific!

This week's Linux and FOSS news:

LINUX NEWS

Linux kernel 6.12 released with real-time PREEMPT_RT. initial Raspberry Pi 5 support, Intel improvements, better laptop support, AMD and RISC-V upgrades:
news.itsfoss.com/linux-kernel-

Linux-libre kernel 6.12 also released with removed proprietary drivers (e.g. Realtek 8852BE-VT Wi-Fi driver):
9to5linux.com/gnu-linux-libre-

Archinstall 3.0 released with revamped interface (each main setting of the installer is opened in a side panel rather than a separate page), ruff linting support, get_loop_devices() function for fetching loop devices etc.:
9to5linux.com/archinstall-3-0-

Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin) daily builds available with updated packages:
9to5linux.com/ubuntu-25-04-plu

Rocky Linux 9.5 released Podman 5.0, enhanced Cockpit, updated development and monitoring tools:
alternativeto.net/news/2024/11

Phosh 0.43.0 released with improved quick settings, accent color support, new Pomodoro timer quick setting, option to disable lockscreen authentication, save screenshots permanently, improved Squeekboard:
phosh.mobi/releases/rel-0.43.0
(Idk how about you but I'm not that excited for desktop Linux updates, or most mobile updates, but I'm always excited for Phosh updates because there's some update in each version which makes my experience better (currently waiting for the next postmarketOS update to get Bluetooth quick setting status page so I don't need to open settings to connect my headset each time. The built-in screenshot feature is pretty weird, idk why someone would prefer saving screenshots to clipboard instead of as a permanent file, currently I use GNOME Screenshot because of this, even if it's not fully mobile friendly, will probably ditch it if I get Phosh 0.43.0))
