Yesterday I learned it was a pigment, today I learned that ground mummies, aka “Mumia,” was a popular medicinal product used for about 400 years. It may have been due to a translation error involving the word bitumen. The properties they were seeking were not present in ground mummy but they still went with it. The product fell out of favor but was never specifically outlawed. ☠️ #mummy #mumia #topical #cocktail #medicine #freemumia

Today in Labor History December 23, 1921: President Warren Harding issued a "Christmas amnesty," freeing Eugene V. Debs and 23 other political prisoners who had been imprisoned for their opposition to World War I under the Sedition Act. Debs was a founding member of the IWW, a socialist, and a 5-time candidate for president of the US. In the 1912 election, he won 6% of the vote. He also led the 1894 Pullman Strike of over 250,000 railroad workers.

In 2023, the U.S. launched its #WithoutJustCause campaign to seek the release of the over 1 million political prisoners around the world, ignoring/denying the fact that it has its own political prisoners, including Mumia Abu-Jamal and Leonard Peltier, who have been in prison through eight different presidencies. None of these eight presidents even considered granting amnesty to them. Will Biden? Not likely.

Oberstes Gericht von #Pennsylvania lehnt Antrag von #Mumia Abu-Jamal auf neues Verfahren ab

Mumia Abu-Jamals Antrag auf Wiederaufnahme des Verfahrens gegen seine Verurteilung wegen Mordes ersten Grades wurde am 10. September 2024 vom Obersten Gericht von Pennsylvania abgelehnt.

Seine Anwälte Judith Ritter (Professorin für Rechtswissenschaften an der Widener University), Sam Spital (Legal Defense Fund) und Bret Grote (Abolitionist Law Center) werden beim Obersten Gerichtshof von Pennsylvania Berufung einlegen.

Das dreiköpfige Richtergremium des #SuperiorCourt, bestehend aus dem vorsitzenden Richter Jack Panella (Demokrat), Victor Stabile (Republikaner) und dem emeritierten vorsitzenden Richter John Bender (Republikaner), erließ ein 23-seitiges Urteil, in dem es die Weigerung der Richterin am #Philadelphia #CommonPleas, Lucretia Clemon, bestätigte, eine Beweisaufnahme zu gewähren.

Das Gericht bestätigte Clemons' Meinung, dass das Gericht aufgrund von Verfahrenshindernissen nicht befugt sei, die ihm vorliegenden Ansprüche zu prüfen. Bei den beiden Streitfragen handelte es sich um Verstöße gegen die #Verfassung bei der Auswahl der Geschworenen (ein Batson-Anspruch) und um die Unterdrückung von #Beweismitteln zugunsten des #Angeklagten (ein #Brady-Anspruch). Um das Gericht zu zitieren: "Der [unterdrückte] Brief war kein Anklageerhebungsmaterial oder entlastend", und die Vorvernehmungsnotizen "zeigen keine unangemessenen Beweggründe für den Ausschluss von Geschworenen".

Black liberation political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal spoke to the CUNY occupation on a phone call from prison and urged them to demand more:

“It is not enough to demand a ceasefire. How about this? Make your demand cease occupation! Cease occupation! Let that be your battle call, because that is the call of history, of which all of you are a part. You are part of something magnanimous, magnificent, and soul-changing, mind-changing, history-changing.

Do not let go of this moment. Make it bigger, make it more massive, make more powerful. Make it echo up into the stars.”

He added, “Do not bow to those who want you to be silent. It is time, right now, this day, this month, this moment, to be heard. And shake the earth so that the people of Gaza, the people of Rafah, the people of the West Bank, the people of Palestine, can feel your solidarity with them.”

The crowd chanted: “Brick by brick, wall by wall, free Mumia Abu Jamal!“

Mumia, a journalist and former Black Panther, is one of the longest held political prisoners in the US, having been held for 42 years. He turned 70 years old a few days ago.
