Time for a new #introduction post.

Hiya. 👋 I'm Dreadful Sanity aka Mel, a level 47 gamer from Germany. #Videogames keep me basically from going completely crazy and therefore alive. I'm #disabled, suffering from debilitating #migraines most days of the week. I also have #ADHD which means my brain is usually going all over the place. And last but not least, there is some #BPD mixed into the mess that I am. Beware of that.

The games that I usually alternate through are...
#Warcraft
#DragonAge
#MassEffect
#Cyberpunk2077
#TheSims4
#BaldursGate3

Though every now and then I will play something new. Or different.

I think that's all. 👉 👈 😊

🇬🇧 During the course of transcribing Legion's dialogue from #MassEffect2, I may actually have solved a mystery I've been puzzling over for a long time: the flashing of Legion's small headlights.
Because between the various versions of ME, the essential question is literally: to flash or not to flash?

Tumblr“To flash or not to flash” - Legion’s headlights in various versions of ME2I can’t believe it - guys, I may have finally solved the big mystery I’ve been puzzling over ever since I got into Mass Effect: the flashing of Legion’s headlights. You may remember that two years...

ever since the beginning of the #AI craze, i've been thinking about the #masseffect franchise. in these science fiction games, AI is a big topic. but the reason why i'm thinking about it is not in some AI taking over the world scenario bullshit. no, it's the distinction that is made in the game between a VI and an AI.

in the mass effect games, you can come across terminals which have VIs on them, which stands for Virtual Intelligence. these are powerful models capable of answering most questions. but they are not really capable of free thought. they are just fancy algorithms. they are not sentient or whatever.

AIs, however, are the closest thing to sentient that there is. they are capable of free thinking, and by free thinking i mean forming opinions on their own, making choices and most importantly to me, complete self-determination.

my point here is we don't have AIs, we have VIs. the distinction is important. AI doesn't exist. it just doesn't. we have fancy algorithms that tech bros masquerade as AI.

After 167 hours, I have completed the Mass Effect Trilogy. WOW, I had no idea what I was in for. I LOVED my time playing these games. The crew you build over the adventures you have is amazing, each with fantastic dialogue, personalities, cultures, skills, and varied shapes and sizes. I actually shed tears playing through these games. While I didn't find the ending to be as bad as I heard, I can understand some frustration. Nevertheless, do yourself a favor and play these games! #masseffect

going to write a proper introduction post!

hello, my name is neo. i'm a transmasc in my 20's. generally speaking i like machines that move people, amusement rides, shooter games, and various sci fi and sci fi-adjacent media. i'm in between jobs right now, but my background spans aerospace engineering, acting, teaching, and operating amusement rides.

i occasionally draw and shoot 35mm film! (even less often, i write mediocre fanfiction.)

i'm on the fence about talking about my mental issues on new social media pages but you might find me mentioning them down the line.

i'll put my interests in the tags. (hopefully that's considered helpful here, like mastodon, and not spammy like it is on some sites.) happy to be here!

Continued thread

My relationship with long videogames

@the_gamer_tavern

In the past I couldn't, for the life of me, commit myself to playing long games (i.e. 30+ hours) because I fell out of interest and dropped the game.

Lately I started playing two "long" (always keep in mind that this adjective is used by my perspective) games: Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mass Effect 1 (the legendary edition) and weirdly enough, seems like they're sticking with me because I'm alternating one or another throughout the gaming sessions.

I don't know if this pattern will be able to help me with other games as well or if it's just peculiar to those two specific games but I'm crossing my fingers 🤞

Have any of you had a similar experience?

I appreciate when #scifi authors make up some fictional physics and then describe all fictional technology as being plausibly based on those physics.

For example, in #MassEffect all the fancy tech works by way of an exotic element that alters the mass of nearby matter.

This gives you shields (bullets with negligible mass can't hurt you), artificial gravity (high mass has a gravitational field), faster-than-light propulsion (negative mass makes an Alcubierre drive possible), and so on.
