The #UnitedStates government has pinpointed #Quebec’s #Bill96, “An Act respecting #French, the official and common language of Quebec,” as a hindrance that could impact #trade between the U.S. and #Canada.

The 2025 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers, published last month, highlights “significant foreign barriers to U.S. exports, U.S. foreign direct investment, and U.S. electronic #commerce.”

Businesses in the province spent millions of $$ to adjust their signs in 2019, &, 5 years later, r looking at doing it all over again.

"The rules up to now was that the French signage had to be significantly bigger, and now it has to be twice bigger," said #RetailCouncilOfCanada Quebec president #MichelRochette.

#US government officials have discussed behind closed doors the possibility of imposing #trade sanctions on #Canada over Quebec's controversial #Bill96 #language law, CBC News has learned.

Documents obtained by CBC News under the U.S. freedom of information law also reveal that American government officials are being told that the implementation of Bill 96 could result in fewer American products being shipped to Canada — not just to #Quebec.
