🆕 Essay: “Leaving the Nest Late—Why Evolution Never Trained Us for Planet‑Scale Survival.”

We’re primates trying to run an 8‑billion‑node civilisation while juggling nukes, CRISPR, AGI & a heating planet.

We sketch a realist, actionable agenda:
• De‑alert nuclear arsenals
• Universal DNA‑screening
• Frontier‑AI regs
• Tax the outrage feed
…and more.

I Like Electric Cars. 700-Mile Range EVs and Wireless Charging Would Make Me Love Them.

[S]olid-state batteries have can get 600 to 700 miles per single charge, instead of the current 250 to 400 or so. That is farther than most traditional cars can go on a single tank of gasoline.

Question for people who study #neutrinos :

Do you have a preferred funny nickname for neutrinos? If not, here are some ideas:

- Neuts (newts)
- Rinos (ree-noes)
- Trinos (tree-noes)
- Nuterinos (like Ned Flanders would say)
- Neu-nues (new news)
- Neu-nos (new noes)
- Tri-tris (tree trees)

I would make a poll, but their are too many choices.

Ever feel like tech is evolving faster than we can understand it?

In our latest podcast, Professor Alberto Segre (Chair of @uiowa’s CS Department) joins us to unpack AI, the internet’s origins, and quantum computing—in plain, thoughtful language.

No jargon. Just clarity.

Was ja viele noch hoffen.
Am 30. April haben wir bei #S4F Osnabrück atmosfair zu Gast in unserer Vortagsreihe. Klimaneutrales Fliegen: Realität oder Illusion?
Ich poste das dann auch nochmal als Ankündigung.

Ivan Tacey on
'Serpentine Cosmopolitics: Cross-cultural analysis of the Rainbow Serpent'

From Amazonia to Australia, rainbow snakes coil at the heart of the cosmologies of Indigenous peoples, embodying forces of creation, destruction, and renewal. Known variously as nagas, dragons, or rainbow serpents, these chthonic entities are intimately entangled with water, blood, women, and untamed power. Among Batek hunter-gatherers of Malaysia, as well as other Southeast Asian Indigenous communities, the violation of taboos—especially those linked to blood—is believed to incite the wrath of these beings who are said to unleash catastrophic floods capable of annihilating entire settlements.

Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Malaysia, Ivan Tacey examines the roles of rainbow serpents in Batek creation myths, rituals, and cosmological landscapes, comparing these traditions with similar narratives and practices from Amazonia and Australia. Offering a cosmopolitical analysis, Ivan critiques the limitations of New Animist approaches, proposing instead that the global prevalence of rainbow snakes in Indigenous cosmologies reflects a 'time-resistant syntax of myth and ritual,' as theorized in Knight, Power, and Watts’ model of human origins.

Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, Ivan will be speaking LIVE in the Daryll Forde, 2nd Floor of UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW. Come in good time by 6:30pm before doors close please. You can also join on ZOOM ID 384 186 2174 passcode Wawilak

Kit Opie on
'Primate mating systems and the evolution of language'

Cheap signals, such as language, can only emerge from an alliance where trust has already been built. The coalition that enabled the evolution of language in modern humans was built to deal with the problem of some males trying to get the benefits of mating without the costs of provisioning.

In this talk Kit Opie draws on research on mating systems across primates to investigate the details of the problem that early modern human females faced and suggest that a coalition was their only way to solve it. The coalition that females built had a ratchet effect of supporting the males who cooperated, while undermining the males who cheated.

Kit Opie is Senior Lecturer in Evolutionary Anthropology, University of Bristol. His research interests are in the evolution of social systems in humans and other primates.

Kit will be speaking LIVE in the Daryll Forde, 2nd Floor of UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW. Come in good time by 6:30pm before doors close please. You can also join on ZOOM ID 384 186 2174 passcode Wawilak

Chris Knight on
'On women and jaguars: why perspectivism got it so wrong'

Across Amazonia, myths hold that in early times it was the jaguars, parrots, tapirs and other animals who first invented bows and arrows, cooking fire, ceremonial buildings, religious ceremonies and other complex cultural accomplishments. Then humans stole these things from the animals, elevating themselves above all other creatures – but at the cost of losing their former ability to engage in easy conversation with the animal world. This mythic view of our origins is the reverse of the Darwinian narrative which our own culture holds up as science.

In this talk, #ChrisKnight will introduce a recent trend in social anthropology – known as ‘perspectivism’ – and discuss whether such radically different ways of perceiving our origins and place in nature can be made to converge.

Chris will be speaking LIVE in the Daryll Forde, 2nd Floor of UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW. Come in good time by 6:30pm before doors close please. You can also join on ZOOM ID 384 186 2174 passcode Wawilak
