I was walking in the Brooklyn NYC neighborhood of Carroll Gardens on January 11, 2025. Something from across the street caught my attention. I approached and saw that it was a courageous, slightly past-its-prime decorative pumpkin in an orange knit hat sitting atop a definitely past-its-prime pumpkin, standing athwart the winter elements.

I published my review of the year that was on my website (The New Leaf Journal) in 2024. In so doing, I put together a list of our 81 most-visited articles (according to our entirely local page-view counter). In 6th place was my 2021 article about installing Ubuntu Touch on a 2013 Google Nexus 7 (UT no longer supports the device). 10th place was my 2021 article about installing LineageOS on the same device (no longer officially supported, although there is a ROM available). 30 and 37 were two 2021 articles about my Murena Teracube 2e phone running /e/ OS (phone no longer sold but /e/ does still push updates, so that's nice). 46th place was my 2023 article on DecSync, a neat syncting utility which has not seen an update in several years. What do all these articles have in common? They are OUTDATED, or more charitably, legacy posts about things I did or used at a time certain. But these articles continue to be big parts of The New Leaf Journal, so I wanted to reassure readers that all of the devices are still alive. (I may have some articles in store about some of them in 2025.) Note the keyboard is a Logitech K310, which I used until last spring and has been out of production for several years -- that article came in at 31st.

You may be wonder why I am posting a photograph of Silk cashew milk at the grocery store. I have only two things to say about the photo. Firstly, I took this photo in New York City, which is in the United States, which in turn writes dates mm/dd/yyyy. Secondly, I took this photo on December 12, 2024. The rest is up to you.

I drafted an article listing 54 things I learned in 2024. I wanted a featured image for the article. I searched my usual sources but did not find anything inspiring. Then I had an idea. Owls are wise. I have owls. I took the owls to my kitchen and took a photo. I call this photo "Fact: Nothing But Owls." There is nothing and no one here other than owls.

This may look like a dove sitting on a rock to the untrained eye. To the trained eye, this looks like a dove sitting on a sculpture in the Long Island City (Queens, NYC) Noguchi Museum's Sculpture Garden. See my article link below for a second dove image and my story about finding the dove in the Sculpture Garden.

I first saw BLOB DYLAN graffiti when I visited Bushwick, Brooklyn, in January 2021. Despite being a life-long resident of Brooklyn, that was only the second time I had been to Bushwick. I did not see any more BLOB DYLAN's prior to May 26, 2024, when I crossed into Bushwick for the third time. I was on about mile 18 of what would end up being a 22.6 mile walk, but that did not stop me from documenting my first BLOB in more than three years.

(Note: I was not 100% sure whether this was in Bushwick or Ridgewood until I checked a map. Fortunately, I made note of the fact I found BLOB at the intersection of Wycoff and DeKalb Avenues.)

I came across this charming car with a cherry blossom design in the heart of Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn, New York CIty. The find was fitting since there were many cherry blossom trees in the area when I stumbled upon the car on April 23, 2024.

A friend sent me a bonsai. The bonsai was packaged and shipped from a nursery in Mississippi. Despite being a small bonsai, it came in a big box. What accounted for the box size? Well... (Note these were not all the Styrofoam peanuts.)

I took this photo on New York City's Brooklyn Bridge with my BlackBerry Classic phone camera on August 12, 2019. This photo is next to the first Manhattan pedestrian exit and close to the second. Back in 2019, the small pedestrian walkway was split between walkers and bikers (the bikes were banished to a separate path in 2021). The Bridge was difficult to navigate without NYC DOT trucks doing trash pickup in broad daylight. My photo does not capture how much it was struggling, but note that the only way around it was for walkers to go into the bike path (left side was for walkers).

I continued my New Years tradition of recapping the year that was at The New Leaf Journal (with the help of our site's fictional dialogue duo). In this post, I reviewed the 51 most-visited articles of the year (statistics courtesy of our local, open source, privacy-friendly hit counter, Koko Analytics... which also makes an appearance in the top 51), from an article about the fediverse at 51 to our Hacker News page 1-fueled #1. In addition to links to all 51 of our most-visited articles and monthly stats, you will find links to some of our 900+ un-ranked posts in the comments.

New York City's Brooklyn Bridge Park occasionally has public art exhibitions. This piece, "Gulf Stream," has been out since May 2022 (apparently until November). I did a bit of research and filled in the gaps about the boat in an article:
