In 2012 the Texas GOP platform explicitly condemned the teaching of critical thinking skills in schools. They were saying the quiet part out loud.

They didn't include that platform in 2013, but this opposition to critical thinking has been around long before, and is still there in Republican policy today.

This is what I remember (and I'm old enough to remember). Abortion was mostly a Catholic issue, and the Evangelicals could give a crap. But then they realized that #RacialSegregation wasn't possible, so they decided to try and control womens' bodies instead!
