#LARB Radio Hour talks with #PankajMishra about his new book, "#TheWorldAfterGaza: A History”

"[H]ow the legacy of the Holocaust has shaped the contemporary world order, including how it has shaped the government of #Israel, and the current war in #Gaza. The book grapples with how, within the relentless violence of the 20th century, #trauma can lead to #nationalism, and also how one #genocide can lead to another."

#Israel’s “Culture of Cruelty” Inspires the #FarRight Worldwide, Says #PankajMishra

“The World After Gaza” author on what Israel’s war reveals about power, violence, and who sets the rules on the world stage.

The Intercept Briefing
March 22 2025, 6:00 a.m.

"After breaking a two-month ceasefire, Israel launched an assault on #Gaza on Tuesday, killing more than 400 people in pre-dawn strikes. The death toll continues to climb as airstrikes persist, and Israel pushes forward with a ground invasion. At least 200 children have been killed in recent attacks, according to UNICEF.
The assault — the deadliest in over a year — came after Donald #Trump gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu the green light to break the #ceasefire. Netanyahu has warned, 'This is only the beginning.'

"Author Pankaj Mishra argues Israel operates within a 'culture of impunity,' emboldened by global #FarRight movements that admire Israel’s 'brazen cruelty.'

"This week on The Intercept Briefing, reporter Jonah Valdez speaks to Mishra about his latest book, 'The World After Gaza,' which examines how the war on Gaza isn’t just another conflict — it’s a turning point reshaping global politics, exposing institutional failures, and forcing a reckoning over who sets the rules on the world stage.

"'Some of the worst people in the world today are drawn to Israel,' Mishra says.

"Not because they believe in Zionism, not because they are protective of Jewish population of Israel, but because Israel again represents to them — embodies this opportunity to take whatever you can and hold on to it using extreme violence if necessary.'"

The Intercept · Israel’s “Culture of Cruelty” Inspires the Far Right Worldwide, Says Pankaj MishraBy The Intercept Briefing

> .. the original advocacy of rights had served the expansion of commerce and a contract-based society in western Europe. But a free and rooted society ought to consist of a web of moral obligations. We have the right to ignore them, but we ought to be actually obliged not to let other people starve, or to let them lapse into destitution.

Global Histories of #Fascism

"Is fascism inseparable from political and economic modernity, fears of underdevelopment and decline, and so doomed to perpetually return? What are the lessons to be drawn from its periodic outbreaks? #VerónicaGago, #NaomiKlein, and #KoheiSaito will reflect on these questions in an online conversation moderated by #PankajMishra."

"It hardly seems believable, but the evidence has become overwhelming: we are witnessing some kind of collapse in the free world."

This important and highly instructive text by Pankaj Mishra reflects on the disproportion between the ethical lessons of the Holocaust projected on colonized people who already have to carry a heavy load of pain and suffering

caused by those who try to harvest the moral gains of "Never again" while acting totally against their own confession to have learned all the lessons which arose out of #fascism and the eradication of European Jews.

To stabilize their wellbeing by using classical colonialistic means with all recklessness that go along with White supremacy directly leads to #Gaza where a prospering HighTech-society bombs a population already exploited by hunger and tired to death to pieces.

Mishra is a voice of the colonized cutting through the fog of historicized White guilt that has been in some kind of magical mutation transformed into the superposition of knowing and commanding with final authority what's right and what's wrong in the world.

Once the judgment is delivered there is no appeal granted so the convicts have to take the law into their own hands. What is generally identified as "decolonization" is a practice of resistance that actually could change the world.

In any case the collapse Mishra writes about marks the beginning of the end of liberalism suffocated by an overdose of unsolvable contradictions between ethical mandate and its negation by all things violent and barbaric.

So not to go down in a world of #fascism means to fight for unity and solidarity on the new grounds of the knowledge that it could possibly be the last chance to turn the tide of #climate catastrophe, imperial and social war

to love for life and a companionship that needs no justification in immanence with life itself.

“Israel today is dynamiting the edifice of global norms built after 1945, which has been tottering since the catastrophic and still unpunished war on terror and Vladimir Putin’s revanchist war in Ukraine. The profound rupture we feel today between the past and the present is a rupture in the moral history of the world since the ground zero of 1945 – the history in which the Shoah has been for many years the central event and universal reference.” #PankajMishra lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/n05/pa
