Update. The Association of American Universities (#AAU) defense of US higher ed is a bit better. It doesn't focus narrowly on the economy.

But it ends on a jarring note of #nationalism.

"America cannot afford to pause for one second in our race with #China and other competitor nations – nations who are doubling down on their investments in university-based research into crucial emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing."

I want US research to be #OpenAccess, and fully available to China and every other country. BTW, I want the same for Chinese research and research from every other country. Taking the nationalist argument seriously makes it an argument against OA, which also makes it an argument against current federal policy (#NelsonMemo) and against the interests of all US universities. Let's remember that science is international. Let's defend open access, not nation-limited access. And let's defend US universities because they're universities, not because they're in the US.

About fifteen years ago or so, I posted this famous image on my Facebook account. One guy, a Canadian soldier, took umbrage with me sharing it. He said the man who refused to sieg heil was a traitor. That it was a person's duty to follow a country's ruling political party, even if that party was wrong.

I'm thinking about this soldier a lot today. I'm thinking about the man who refused to Nazi salute a lot today.

I'd honestly considered voting for the Liberals because of Carney, but the Liberal party just okayed an arms shipment to Israel. These weapons will be used to continue the genocide against Palestinians. This is despite the Liberals promising not to aid and abet genocide.

Canada was built on genocide. It continues to profit on genocide. I will not take part in the self-congratulatory nationalism burgeoning in this country. I will not vote for any party which continues to participate in genocide.

This week, aid workers and paramedics in Gaza were killed one by one and buried in a mass grave. This is a crime against humanity, and Canada is complicit.

Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of #patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. #Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

11. Disdain for #Intellectuals and the #Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to #HigherEducation and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other #academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

Trump targets 'anti-American ideology' at Smithsonian museums

"US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting the Smithsonian Institution, which operates more than 20 museums and research centres visited by millions yearly in Washington DC and New York City.

"The order directs the vice-president to 'eliminate improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology' from the institute's museums, centres and the National Zoo in Washington.

"It also directs the interior secretary to restore federal properties, including parks, memorials and statues, which 'have been improperly removed or changed in the last five years to perpetuate a false revision of history'.

"The move is part of Trump's effort to shape American culture, in addition to politics."
