Can someone explain me how to write a DM here on Mastodon?

If anyone from the fediverse want to give it a try, direct messages is now available on Bluesky
Settings: Everyone, Users I Follow, No One
Once upon a time, #twitter #DMs worked exactly the same way they work on #Mastodon, except there wasn't a visibility setting, instead you had to manually put 'DM' at the beginning of a tweet.
Yep, it was easy AF for your intended DMs to accidentally go public
If you notice, DM stands for 'DIRECT Message', not 'PRIVATE Message'. There should be no expectation of explicit privacy in a direct message - it simply goes directly to the mentioned users, not privately, and as on early twitter, it's possible for user error to fuck it up.
i am #looking for #slimes and #demons to #breed a #SlimeKnight in #DragonQuest #Monsters1. so, anyone in the #Georgia #Savannah area with a #GameBoy #LinkCable please #FeelFree to #DirectMessage me #directly
Forever scaring myself after I've sent a direct message on here because it appears on my home timeline and just blends in with everything else.
Sure would be nice to have that a bit more separated.
Hey Fediverse, I've seen a lot of people make references to DMs here , as in "DM me to talk about this topic ."
I assume that means direct message. But I don't see any sort of capability to do that anywhere! I can start a message by @'ing someone and they see it and reply usually, but it's just a normal toot.
So, what's wrong with me? What am I missing? Is it just my instance that lacks direct private messages?

I just realized private messaging or mentions is not fully implemented in @ivory. No easy way to check all messages from everyone and conversations are not grouped.
On a larger issue, direct messaging as a whole seems broken in Mastodon, at least in my case. They appear in notifications but not in direct messages tab, not even on the web client.
#ServiceToot A direct message on a computer (browser) shows a triangle (square cut on the diagonal) behind the photo of the person you are communicating with. Unsure how that's perceived by a screenreader.
You can see your own DMs in your own profile, which can be unnerving so you think your DM is not private. It is. Just tested with a friend.
Sent a DM to Person A.
Asked Person B if they could see it on my profile. They couldn't, and they do know Person A. #DirectMessage #FediTip
How to send a direct message?
1. Click Direct Messages
2. Nothing happens.
3. Give up?
4. Try something else.
Just sent my first #DirectMessage in Mastodon.
While I appreciate the up-front warning about how such messages are not secure and you shouldn’t send sensitive information in them, I’m agog at the implication that people treat #Twitter and #Facebook messages as secure. Because I totally did not trust those companies not to read or leak my DMs, even before Space Putin took over.
Heck, I’m reluctant to send sensitive info over #iMessage, and I have a high level of trust in its security.
So it appears you can't actually fully delete a DM in Twitter? I tried but I get a message saying it only deletes it for me and the other party will still be able to see it. On that note, is there a way to actually delete them?
