Today I'm feeling sad that music fans growing up in the age of streaming will never get to experience the compilation album.

I mean, sure, playlists and whatever. But it's not the same as having a physical record that you listen to over and over, until you know the songs in your bones. Then years later, randomly hearing any one of them has an emotional effect that's almost physical.

Various – “4 Bands That Could Change The World!” (1987)
Gasatanka Records

Another favorite comp. Cool bands, good tracks, and silly cover artwork.

Anyone else here familiar with this one? I got it because at the time I was big into anything on Gasatanka / Dutch East India Trading / Homestead Records.

Comps were a great way to explore bands without breaking the bank. Like the White Flag songs on this one. I couldn’t find those anywhere else til I finally found a copy of Wild Kingdom about 10 years later. There’s a cool punk cover of Iggy and the Stooges’ “I Gotta Right”, plus some great sound excerpts I often used to help transition between songs.
