A toxic relationship: plastics & ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
A new paper explores how these industries fuel each other’s growth, harming health & environment. With ongoing talks for a #PlasticsTreaty, authors make the case for tackling these dual crises together.
(2/3) Food companies process food without regard for its #nutrition content, focusing instead on getting us to buy as much as possible. The problem with #UPFs is that they drive us to overeat; it’s weight gain, not preservatives, that's the #health risk: https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/2024/09/20/ultra-processed-foods-obesity-reasons-overeating/
Processing is just a tool. As food companies are in the business of selling food, they use it to give us an endless variety of cheap & irresistible food that's readily available, requires no preparation & is advertised relentlessly... @joelanman #TimSpector ranting on about it and then launching his own #Zoe range of #UPFs is another fab example

Are ultra-processed foods (UPFs) the new tobacco?
Some scientists say yes, but it's not that simple. Not all UPFs are created equal!
Learn why the debate on UPFs is more nuanced than you might think. #NutritionDebate #UPFs #HealthyEating

#Ultraprocessed #foods need tobacco-style #warnings, says scientist. #UPFs should also be heavily taxed due to impact on #health and #mortality, says scientist who coined term. #food and #nutrition #healthcare #publichealth #diabetes #eating #meals https://www.theguardian.com/global/article/2024/jun/27/ultra-processed-foods-need-tobacco-style-warnings-says-scientist
"The #Tobacco, #UltraProcessedFoods (#UPFs), #FossilFuel,& #Alcohol industries are "wholly or partly responsible" for nearly 1/4 of all deaths in the region.
#FourIndustries (4) kill at least 7,000 people every day. The same commercial entities block regulation that would protect the public from harmful products, & protect health policy from industry interference"

It's amazing that Michael Pollan's ground breaking books and movies are over 10 years old and yet most of us haven't taken his simple advice seriously.
"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants"
And
"Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognise as food."
Concerning:
"A 2022 study...found that men (but not women) who consumed a large amount of [Ultra-Processed Foods] had a 29% greater risk of colorectal cancer.... (I)n August 2023, a research team presented a study concluding that a 10% rise in daily UPF intake was linked to a 6% rise in heart disease risk. And in September, a Harvard study found that the women who ate the most UPFs were 50% more likely to develop depression than those who ate the least."
#Nova food classification, based on processing & the use of additives, does not help understanding the potential harm of different foods. Some #ultraprocessed food (wholegrain products) may be beneficial, minimally processed food (red #meat) may not: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.q793 #UPFs
#Ultraprocessed food is not necessarily bad. Meat-based ready-to-eat products drive all cause #mortality, but quality #diets attenuate it—eating less processed #meat can be beneficial for #health. Analyses must control confounding factors: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.q793 #UPFs #NOVA
