It’s quite easy to mistakenly write lead (element Pb) instead of led, because they sound the same. I see this all the time. But it never seems to happen that people write read (past tense) instead of red, yet the two situations seem similar.
I guess it has to do with the relative common-ness of led and red, and the fact that we learn red much earlier than led.

Took a registration from a town called Chagrin Falls today.
Me: Chagrin Falls? That's, uh, that's quite the place name!
Caller: I'm disappointed to admit that I live there!
Me: I'm a little embarrassed that I even mentioned it, really.
Caller: I'm ashamed to tell you that the bridge over the Chagrin River is currently out, too.
We couldn't stop giggling!
Is it the grocer’s apostrophe, or the grocers’ apostrophe? I often wonder*, but I’ve never asked a grocer.
