This search engine treats the whole web as a unified ecosystem where I can navigate as a single unit, not simply a federation of separate servers. I strongly believe that this kind of thinking is the future of the #Fediverse and #ActivityPub.

If anyone else is doing work like this, please let me know. So far, I believe this search feature of #Emissary is the only one of its kind, and we should build a community that works to push this forward.

Just discovered Emissary. It’s a social web toolkit that’s “designed for end users, app creators, and hosting admins”. It’s a highly customizable and scalable ActivityPub-enabled server software with few dependencies.

Only two known servers currently use #Emissary, but one of them is highly prominent: bandwagon.fm.

This has lots of potential if you want to build federated social web software with a specific use case scenario in mind.

Here’s the website:

Huge thanks to @dansup for creating respectfulplatforms.org. This is the kind of declaration everyone should get behind.

Honestly, it's still a bit of a "to do" list for #Emissary and #Bandwagon. Moderation tools, in particular, are still lacking right now. But I'm going to work hard to complete these, because I believe every person - all 8 billion of us - deserves to use an Internet that values people over profits, privacy over censorship, and humanity over technology.

@dansup

This is super interesting! I was just having an offline discussion about something very similar.

Yes. This feature set needs to be a standalone service with an #OpenAPI that anyone can use.

I would love to plug into this from #Emissary as well. How do I contribute, or connect to this project?

I’m on board with lots of this. Mitra is fantastic. Intimidating, sometimes as a developer trying to make something unique.

And yes: unchecked power (corporate or otherwise) always goes badly in the end.

I would live a future where everyone self-hosted their own content. But today’s hurdles make this unrealistic for the vast 99% of the non-technical population. #Emissary aims for a middle ground that’s easy for non-techies yet portable to keep power in check.

@harce I'm building #Emissary, which is pretty close to what you're describing.

It's a full #ActivityPub server and CMS that lets you build custom applications using just HTML and JSON configs. emissary.dev

Right now, I'm building bandwagon.fm on Emissary, focused on musicians, and am planning to follow through with a custom apps for artists, blogs, event registrations, etc..

If you have bandwidth, I'd love to talk more about your ideas. I think Emissary could handle it.
