I was reading "Commodore - The Amiga Years" and my son asked me what it was about. I was going to reply "It's a book a about the company that made this computer" but I didn't, instead I replied "It's a book about the people who made this computer". Companies don't make things, people do.

Day 7 of #Amigapril

Here are some stats on the PiStorm-powered A1200. I think the number in picture two right of the individual Amiga models is the factor how much faster this one is compared to the specific model. This is of course only the CPU crunching power and doesn't affect the graphic capabilities. But this thing can now do 1274 times as much maths as my A600 from back then 😄

Turrican - Featured in our book - Commodore Amiga: a visual compendium

The #Atari 1200XL was a 8bit #homecomputer running a #MOS 6502 #CPU at 1.79 MHz. When this beautiful machine was launched in 1983 with 64Kb RAM the price was under thousand dollars, but... https://youtu.be/JyA5tA5mmYY

$omehow, in the #8bitwar the #C64 was much more popular even when specs been almost the same. The difference in #BASIC language was less significant for the success. Most likely that competition was won by #Commodore because Jack Tramiel took the advice of his grandfather so serious.

It's day 6 #AmigApril

Some weeks ago I got a little upgrade for this A1200. I had an RasPi3 laying around, so I bought a PiStorm extension board for the Miggy. And this thing is wild.

It is like every other turbo card for the A1200. It is placed in the trapdoor and replaces the CPU, extends the memory and does a lot more stuff. But instead of a faster 680x0 CPU or a FPGA (both very expensive) there is a Rasberry Pi, that emulates a super fast 680x0 CPU in software.

Think about it. There is original hardware, but the CPU is software-emulated by another computer. And that emulation is faster than any original CPU ever has been. That's completely wild.

More "extremely exciting" Commodore 116 keyboard work:

Instead of fixing the broken keypads, I decided to replace a part that I just couldn't stand looking at, but otherwise worked - the very dirty and butcher-soldered keyboard cable. But apart from the eye sore, I also wanted to make the keyboard detachable again. Perfect excuse.

So here we go. A pair of Adafruit pitch adapters, a flat flex cable, some soldering. Looks better, and it's working.
