Just dropping the last two pony photos from March here so I can move on to April :)

Please enjoy our warm-snow-chaos-weather vibes while they last. Before you know it, the grass is going to pop up and totally change the color scheme. I even saw #bluebirds hopping around on the fence posts the other day.

Abigail the black Percheron horse stands in the middle of the frame munching a pile of hay. The snow has melted in her immediate surroundings, but the field beyond is still white. The birches and other deciduous trees behind her are leafless, with a few conifers mixed in. Above, there's blue sky to the right and clouds sweeping away to the left.

The dark trees and hill in the background divide the image into grey-white cloudy sky above and white snowy horse field below. Along the fence line stand Abner, a flaxen chestnut Haflinger horse, and then further away Abigail, the same black Percheron horse from the previous image. They are eating from their buckets.

A female bluebird lands next to another female in the feeder. The current rule is--only one bluebird in the feeder at a time. She was given the bum's rush.

One (male) bluebird on his way into the feeder and one (female) bluebird on her way out.

A male bluebird is eating dried mealworms in the feeder. In this photo you can see his beak is open and a mealworm is on his tongue.

There is one bluebird in the feeder, one hanging off the edge, and two in the air headed away from the feeder. These days, the maximum occupancy of the feeder is ONE, so I expect the bird hanging off the edge will leave soon.

This is a photo of a clump of a dozen daffodils in the sunlight. Their outer petals (tepals) are almost white and their central part (the corona) is bright yellow.

This is a photo of a crocus from above. The petals (or tepals) are white with a lot of purple veins running up and down. The anthers (the smaller central bits that hold the pollen) and stigmas (parts that accept the pollen) are golden-orange.

This is a photo of my neighbor's flowers. They have blocky petals (or sepals in this case) that are light pink, light green and white and a lot of stamens and carpals (that are the male and female parts of the flower). It's some kind of hellebore (or lenten rose, called that because it blooms near Lent).

The bluebirds still come by but now that the weather is above freezing, they only come in small numbers. This photo shows two female bluebirds in the air near the feeder, one leaving (with wings widespread) and one landing (with wings swept back). A male bluebird is already in the feeder.

A female bluebird on the left of the feeder expresses her displeasure at the new female arrival by opening her beak at her and raising her wings in threat.

The bluebird on the left leaps up, feet and claws extended towards the newcomer's head. That is a serious threat. The newcomers extends her wings intending to either flee or fight.

In this picture, we can see the extended wings of the bird being attacked. A primary feather and two secondary feathers are missing on the right wing. Either she had a close call with a predator or got injured some other way, maybe in a fight.

A few days ago it was 80F/26.5C and today it is snowing. That is March. The bluebirds are getting more and more territorial and there are more spats at the feeder. And the hawk is getting more active, too. Two female bluebirds, wings widespread and hovering above the feeder are clawing at each other in a dispute over who gets to use the feeder. The smaller bluebird on the right won.

A male bluebird already at the feeder tells a new male arrival that he is not welcome. There was some beak action and the newcomer left quickly.

A Cooper hawk (gray with a cinnamon and white checked chest and belly) landed on a tree branch to finish its lunch. I suspect the victim was a European starling, which is just fine with me. (It was snowing and the snow interfered with the camera's autofocus, so this isn't the best picture.)

Now that the weather is warming, the bluebirds are not so friendly with each other. It seems the maximum occupancy of the feeder is 3, not 10 as it was before. Two male bluebirds are sitting on the feeder and one of them is yelling at a female bluebird who has just landed. She left very quickly.

The Cooper's hawk was hunting bluebirds and landed right above me on a branch. It has delicate feet compared to say, an owl.

There are 3 bluebirds in the feeder and 3 in the air around the feeder (plus one perched on a strut) waiting for their turn in the feeder. One of the feeder birds is beginning to flap its way out of the feeder, sending mealworms flying.

All 6 bluebirds in this picture are either airborne or have their wings spread, preparing to take to the air in a total changeout of the birds in the feeder.

Nine bluebirds are on the top of the mealworm feeder, where I left some mealworms.

A female bluebird descends from above into the feeder, which has two bluebirds already in it.

There are 3 bluebirds in the feeder and 2 descending into it.

I love the underside of the wings of Northern flickers which, in our part of the country, are bright yellow. Here, a flicker (whose head you can't see, spreads her wings preparatory to taking off from the feeder.
