The end goal of these many attacks on libraries & librarians, these bizarre & fact-free claims, is to privatize ($$$), theocratize, or outright eliminate these institutions. Some libraries & librarians are receiving threats & hate speech every day. Please support your local libraries of every type in the ways you are best able. Please talk to your librarians to see if your libraries are ok (some are!).
@yamainu Remember: Supporting your local library can be as simple as show up! Lots of places keep track of how many people come to the library! Read books (for free). Use the computers and/or wifi! Get a library card! Take things home! Many of these are free. Writing letters and calling local officials in support of the library is even better!
@yamainu Alas, libraries share user data now: through Patron Point's Ekata ID verification; through 3rd party apps like Overdrive... But yes, do support us. I work in a library.
@irizoris Indeed. We don’t share information by policy or from our systems, but we can’t control third party services. We do our best in licensing but I image a popular book platform that relies on user data for suggestions and such doesn’t negotiate. We can only all and hope that users always look at the Terms & Conditions and opt out if they want to, and that places a huge burden on the patron (which is all of us).
