It’s National Moth Week, July 20-28, to celebrate the beauty, lifecycles and habitat of moths, so I’m reposting my eclipse of moths (the delightful term of venery for a group of moths) and also for my #InsertAnInvert2024 wildcard week.

This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctural moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), 🧵1/

My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta). In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.

My dad would have been 102 today had he not had a stroke. Seems strange to be thinking he could still be alive, but then I’m looking after a fully active 105 yo who celebrates his 106th birthday on the 18th!

This is a unique hand made cyanotype on watercolour paper (8" x 10.25") with a deckle edge an image wildflowers and grasses with three linocut, moths. The moths are all found here in Ontario: the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta).

I wanted to paint moths today after seeing photos of tiger moths.. and I also wanted to make bookmarks. So I combined both urges and created this page which is to be cut up into bookmarks later on.

For now, enjoy the moths and colors in one piece.
