Bobbing Boat

The water level in this canal is a bit lower than optimal. It's below the level at which excess water drains away.

In times of drought, Canal & River Trust has reservoirs from which to top up canal water levels. In times of heavy rain, the canals have structures, called weirs, over which excess water flows.

Pictured here is the most common weir design: a straight edge that forms a threshold.

A weir, built into the bank of a canal. It's a long, steel edge over which water will flow if the canal gets overfull. The water level is about a handbreadth too low for that. The steel edge is supported by a series of steel bars. Over the edge is a concrete gutter that runs to a drain at the far end. The entire weir is roughly 10 meters or yards. A railing prevents people om the towpath from falling into the gutter, which is about 2 meters or yards down. There is winter vegetation in the background, and dead leaves on the canal's towpath. The photo is annotated with an arrow that shows the direction of flow for excess water from the canal into the concrete gutter.

In the blur
of this weary existence
I wander city streets
seeking some sort
of half ass absolution
for the vast #reservoir
of my selfish actions

Always attracting
strange looks
from the judgemental population
as I mutter
half baked poetry to myself
into the indifferent wind

Clumsy stabs
at rhythmic perfection
while spouting
deep reflections
on the meaning
of my ebbing life

All these disjointed
connections
that never seems
to find completed
puzzle resolution

Closure mocks
and eludes me
as horns blare
at the catatonic kook
staring up at the traffic light
in the middle of Strange Street

My padded cell awaits
