Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) form in the coldest parts of the atmosphere, high above the Earth, during winter in the polar regions. These clouds happen when temperatures drop so low that water vapour freezes onto tiny particles. The clouds are most common when the stratosphere gets extremely cold, around -78°C (-108°F), which is why they are usually seen in winter.

Ice polar stratospheric clouds, a.k.a. #nacreousclouds above Finland on Saturday. Unfortunately no spectacular colours for me, since I was looking at them from the wrong direction, but there's a lot of nice pictures of these very same clouds from all over the country, some of which are quite brilliantly colourful. The one on the right was over eastern Finland, the other one on the left over South Ostrobothnia. I first saw them even before noon, but they only started looking interesting around the sunset.

A pale white cloud on the darkening evening sky. The edges of the cloud are somewhat fuzzy. It has a slight orange tint at the bottom edge, as the sunset creeps up to its level.

A wider shot with the previous cloud on the right and another similar one on the left. This image has a different exposure and appears a bit darker, highlighting the contrast between the dark sky and the bright clouds. The cloud on the left is lower to the horizon and has a more noticeable orange tint.

What I think is a polar stratospheric cloud (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_stratospheric_cloud) seen over Linnanmäki this afternoon.

A partially frozen body of water (Töölönlahti) at dusk. In the foreground are some dead reeds still standing. At the far side of the lahti are some villas, and behind that the top of some of the rides at Linnanmäki amusement park are visible. There’s an almost iridescent-white cloud in the middle of the picture, whiter and better illuminated than the surrounding sky.

Oh, wow, the #Eocene , a distant #climate analogue 50 mio years ago, sported beautifully coloured #PolarStratosphericClouds which warmed the #Arctic polar winter by 7°C and allowed alligators to live on the Canadian archipelago. ^^
But even IF mankind should somehow manage to emit as much fossil CO2 to reach Eocene levels of 900ppm without breaking its civilisation and ripping supply chains apart – those clouds would not become such prominent – and temperature forcing – feature on the planet we now inhabit. The Shining

Ethereal nacreous or polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) forming at altitudes of 15,000 - 25,000 m (49,000 - 82,000 ft) and at very low temperatures, below -78 °C (-108 °F).

A photo of the dawn. The sky is still quite dark, and a band of orange-yellow is beginning to form on the horizon. At the bottom of the shot is a street-light, which is still lit. A bank of heavy cloud extends across most of the photo just above the horizon, and a magpie is flying just above it, the feathers of its wingtips are quite clearly defined. In the centre of the shot, above the cloud bank, is a strange, glowing cloud containing fairly random rainbow colours, like a soap bubble. There are more of the same over on the right of the shot but, where the central cloud is a more of a fuzzy blob, the ones on the right are streaky. It looks otherworldly.

Last night’s polar stratospheric clouds over #Oslo were in continous change both in form and colour. It waa hard to choose favourites and almost impossible to tear myself away from the window. #PolarStratosphericClouds
