After Uruguay we had a sea day on Star Princess heading south along Argentina's coast before docking at Puerto Madryn. We took an excursion that involved a two-hour bus ride through Patagonia - which was incredibly, incredibly dull - before arriving at the Punta Tombo nature reserve. Here we saw hundreds of Magellanic Penguins in the wild with plenty of chicks still retaining some of the soft brown feathers of youth, and it's where we learned that the sound of a penguin shouting is indistinguishable from that of a donkey braying. We were also fortunate enough to spot guanacos in the area which with vicuñas are the only wild species of camelid in South America, the llamas and alpacas being domesticated.

We're on mostly flat, dry ground, pebbled, with the small warm-toned stones of browns, whites, and blacks that feel like they could be part of a beach. A few growths of small bushes intrude into the scene in the background and just coming in from the right. The view is only of the ground with no other indication of what else is around but in front of us there are eight penguins. The nearest to us is in sharp focus, has flippers raised, and is leaning forward to the left with mouth open wide, apparently in mid-scream. Its black and white body still has tufts of brown feathery down on it over its back indicating its young age. Of the other penguins, two others stand while the remainder are lying down on the ground. It's possible to tell that a couple of other penguins still have their young, brown coat.
