It was springtime, and everything was bursting into bloom.

There was a garden to prepare, trees to trim, the windows of the house could use a good spring cleaning . . . but wait . . .

Perhaps this day could be one NOT filled with tasks and things to do, but rather one to wander through the new greenery while simply basking in the sunshine.

Hans Hofmann. Work Time, 1944.

You may not even know his name. His art doesn't get a lot of airtime. But he's often credited with founding the first school of truly modern art and bringing abstract expressionism to America. German, he emigrated well before WW2. I think this is a painting for our own time. Look at the date and title: We need to remember what comes next, after the Nazis: remaking a better world. He taught Krasner and Frankenthaler. His shadow is very very long.
