On this otherwise joyous day comes a sad and disappointing announcement from JAXA, that the time to recover the OMOTENASHI CubeSat has passed.

OMOTENASHI was known to have been tumbling and losing power earlier in the week, after deployment from the Artemis spacecraft. It would have deployed a low-cost lander on the moon by 24:00 JST.

The OMOTENASHI (Outstanding MOon exploration Technologies demonstrated by NAno Semi-Hard Impactor) CubeSat mission includes a small lunar lander. Once on the lunar surface, the OMOTENASHI lander will observe the radiation environment of the lunar surface.

#OMOTENASHI will be the smallest spacecraft ever to land on the lunar surface and will mark Japan as the 4th nation to successfully land on the Moon.

#Artemis CubeSat update -

The Japanese CubeSat OMOTENASHI (Outstanding MOon exploration Technologies demonstrated by NAno Semi-Hard Impactor) is not doing too well; it is tumbling, its batteries are not getting sufficiently charged.

The ambitious OMOTENASHI mission includes a small lunar lander, the smallest of its kind. Once on the lunar surface, the OMOTENASHI lander will observe the radiation environment of the lunar surface.

We wish it all the best for a speedy recovery.

🚀 La #NASA ha llevado a cabo con éxito el lanzamiento del cohete espacial #SLS en el marco de la misión #ArtemisI #Artemis1, que busca preparar el camino de la exploración lunar (📰 ➡️ bit.ly/3Ee9kcQ).
