#HomelessnessIsNowACrime, to say nothing of being #disabled #indigenous #brown #immigrants, even with #citizenship, in an encounter on the street

This headline is ridiculous, and the article refers to the man who was murdered by the police as “the suspect”, but he was just a homeless man sitting on the railroad tracks, so I guess he could be considered a “trespassing suspect”, but that makes him sound like he was doing something a lot worse than just existing outside.

According to data from 2022, the average annual cost for a Federal prison inmate is about $115 per day.

This is more than the cost per day of most motels.

Since #Homelessness is now apparently able to be categorized as a criminal offense, how about "sentencing" the infractors to a state-funded 30-day stay at the local Red Roof Inn (for which a local billboard last night showed the current daily rate to be about $75)?

This would not only be less expensive to the State, but also not punish those in dire straits for existing, but rather give them a month to find their footing and possibly find a way to sufficiency. And if not- it's still cheaper than prison.

Probably still more expensive than a UBI, though.
