Autumn sunset sailing at Engabreen, part of Svartisen/Black Ice Glacier

The secondary glacier Engabreen from the main Black Ice Glacier stretches an arm as low as 20 meter over sea level.

That is the closest to sea level for any glacier in mainland Europe.

West Svartisen Glacier is the 2nd largest glacier in Norway, and the white on top of all the mountains in this picture is this glacier main plateau.

That’s not cloud cover—just snow being torn from the summit by strong alpine winds.

A snow-covered peak rises steeply above the clouds in the Eastern Alaska Range. The summit and ridgelines of McGinnis Peak are sharp and jagged, with snow visibly blowing off the top in strong wind, creating a wispy veil that mimics clouds. The lower foreground is completely obscured by blowing snow.

The ice is layered with streaks of gray-brown sediment and intersecting crevasses, giving the surface a deeply fractured and textured appearance. Glaciers in Scandinavia and Svalbard experienced their highest rates of mass loss on record and saw the largest annual glacier mass loss of any glacier region globally.

Fifth day of the previous year's #Switzerland trip. Taking the Bernina Line, highest railway crossing in Europe, one of the steepest in the world. We went from #SanktMoritz to #Tirano, and then changed to a regular Italian train to #Milano.

First view: #Morteratsch station. When the station was built in 1908, the plain next to it was the lip of the Morteratsch glacier. The glacier is now 3 km away.

View from Morteratsch station, towards what in 1908 used to be the end of the glacier tongue. It is now a flat plain, overgrown with alpine trees, mostly conifers. It is early June, all the plants are vibrantly green. In the far back, snowed Alps can be seen.

View over an empty glacial U valley. The glacier has receded long ago, enough for the trees to start growing in the old ice bed. It now only shows in the end of the valley, where it is still connected to the fresh snow from Alpine peaks. It is early June, the trees are green, the Alps still fully covered with snow.

2024 European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report

Key messages:
a)
#Europe experienced its warmest year, with the second highest number of heat stress days and tropical nights, on record.

b)
The area of Europe experiencing days with temperatures below freezing is decreasing, with the year seeing the largest area on record with fewer than three months (90 days) of frost days. The number of ‘cold stress days’ was the lowest on record.

c)
For the European region and for the Mediterranean Sea, the annual sea surface temperature was the highest on record. It was also the warmest year on record for European lakes.

d)
#Glaciers in #Scandinavia and #Svalbard saw their highest recorded annual rates of mass loss. They also saw the largest mass loss of any #glacier region globally.

e)
Western Europe saw one of the ten wettest years on record and Europe experienced the most widespread #flooding since 2013.

f)
The year saw a record proportion of electricity generation by renewables, at 45%

I'm giving a speech at #Toastmasters today related to a trip we took back in 2001, specifically our experiences in a delightful small mountain town, Invermere, on the way to Jasper. That made me want to review photos from that trip. I don't have any saved photos from Invermere, but I have plenty from Jasper. I particularly loved all the waterfalls and that amazing turquoise color of the water (apparently from scattering by super fine "glacial flour").
