"Moonquakes Surprisingly Common" is #NASA #astronomy picture of the day (#APOD) - Seismometers left by Apollo crews continued to transmit #quake data for years. Data from max sensor network installation in 1972 until 1977 shows moonquakes are more common than earthquakes. One theory about why says that could be caused by tidal influence from Earth's gravity. Future lunar stations and settlements will need to plan for quakes. apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap250406.ht #planetary #geology

Excellent visit earlier this week to Torosay Sand Limited's gravel quarry in eastern Mull. Most of the quarry consists of bedded gravel and sand deposited by glacial melt rivers around 16 to 15 thousand years ago when most of Scottish glacier ice melted away. But these are overlain by a couple of meters of grey till produced by local Mull glaciers during the "Loch Lomond Readvance" when ice grew again in western Scotland between about 13000 and 11700 years ago. #Geology #Glaciation #Mull

🐚Most likely an Acteonella fossil, estimated to be around 70 million years old. This region was once covered by sea, and one of the nearby mountains was a massive coral reef in ancient times—traces of a long-lost ocean world, now hidden in stone.

Shot with my #nikon d500. More to follow :)

On today's bike ride, I stopped at Lewis & Clark State Park. It's at the Sandy River Delta where it flows into the Columbia River. The Lewis & Clark expedition named the Sandy River because when they got there in 1805, it had been overrun a few years earlier by a mudflow from an eruption of Mt Hood. It's completely regrown today. #Portland #PNW #cycling #volcano #geology #history
