I failed my saving roll... it's a small book, which makes it more poignant.

This is perhaps the first science fiction book published in Europe. it was published after the death of its author Cyrano de Bergerac, by his best friend Le Bret in his memory and to follow a last will.

It's a humanist critique on mores, and also has rockets as a means to reach the Moon.

Ça me tittille depuis longtemps de faire une grosse analyse des très nombreuses adaptations et traductions de #Cyrano en anglais.

Mais j'ai besoin, avant tout, de comprendre le rapport qu'a la langue anglaise à la poésie, la structure des strophes, et surtout à la rime.

Si quelqu'un connaît une ressource là dessus, je lui en serai énormément reconnaissant.

Love #SteveMartin's re-imagining of it as 'Roxanne' (watched lots, growing up) but didn't realise til just re-watched, not only did he act with #comedy genius as the lead, he produced it & wrote the brilliant #screenplay 🎥

The movie is Steve Martin's re-telling, in lead role, & as screenwriter & producer, of French playwright Edmond Rostand's theatre piece 'Cyrano de Bergerac', a story about a witty, highly-intelligent, kind man with an enormous nose who, when falling in love with the woman of his dreams, learns to take his imperfections in stride. The film poster is a photograph that shows Steve Martin looking to 'stage right', so towards the left of the photograph, slightly upwards & with a hopeful quality. He has a small yellow bird perched on his long nose. This is in reference to a piece of the story.

#Cyrano The sets and costumes are *immaculate.* The script and lyrics are awful. You can’t get away with this in a world where LMM exists. (Whatever you may think of him, he’s *very* good with lyrics.)

It’s a CRIME to do a version of Cyrano de Bergerac where the *words* are the weakest part.
