GitHub Copilot is an incredible tool. But ultimately just a convenience—I can still work without it.

I’ve been exploring alternatives and found the Continue extension with self-hosted models using Ollama. It’s not as good though.

One of my reasons is that when tools become too good and free, alternatives struggle to exist. Just like Firefox gives us a choice beyond Chrome, I believe in making space for more options.

As a hobbyist programmer, my red lines for coding with AI assistants.

1. Locally installed models only.
2. Do my own logic and coding, but treat the AI like a junior developer and assign it tasks from time to time.
3. Understand, explain and test every line of code that the junior developer contributes.

I still have to put in the work.

Interested in hearing others opinions for and against.

As someone who is living the #FIRE (Financially #independant and retire early) movement... Let me tell you this.. #Retirement at the age when your body can't work, is very different from retirement at a #younger #age.

Because retiring early is not about 'not working' but rather about 'not working for money'.
When this shift happens, you #continue to #work, but in a different manner, you dont do a job but start #projects to work on that you like. You don't like something, you stop doing it.
