We actually weren't in a cemetery, but a local park, but with this derelict statue, we were able to fake the look of a cemetery quite effectively. I linger before the stone angel, whose bowed figure touches my soul. His sorrow becomes tangible in the cold stone. My fingers wish to stroke the curved wings, offering comfort where none seems possible. In his timeless grief, I find a strange peace. He watches over the past, while I merely pause on my journey to preserve his silent story.

Ich verweile vor dem steinernen Engel, dessen gesenkte Gestalt meine Seele berührt. Seine Trauer wird greifbar im kalten Stein. Meine Finger möchten über die geschwungenen Flügel streichen, Trost spenden, wo keiner möglich scheint. In seinem zeitlosen Schmerz finde ich seltsame Ruhe. “They didn’t burn witches, they burned women” - A visit to the gravesites of the women (and few men) who were unjustly persecuted and executed during the Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts, USA, circa 1692-1693. A mar on American history in the sea of cruel treatment of women that occurred worldwide from the 15th to 18th centuries where the world of patriarchy and misogyny was used to control women, torturing and murdering those who didn’t comply or questioned commonly accepted gender roles. A time that feels we are still recovering from, that we’re still seeking the release from the silent oppression of, that we’re dangerously close to recreating in modern day society.

Let’s not forget where we’ve been so we can better guide next steps of where we want to go! 🫶🏼

For #FindsFriday, we have some finds from the #cemetery of the #Elisabethinenspital in #Vienna. These were found during our 2019 #excavations on behalf of the #Franziskusspital. They are so-called #Breverl, paper pictures of #saints that were worn on the body, for example, in a #pendant made of metal and glass, to ward off #evil. The finds here date from the 18th century, but Breverl were widespread until the 20th century.
