Crypt of the Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-and-Sainte-Julitte in Nevers, France, 2021

A crypt (from Latin crypta "vault") is a stone chamber beneath the floor of a church or other building. It typically contains coffins, sarcophagi or religious relics. First known in the early Christian period, in particular North Africa and Byzantium, churches were often built over a Mithraic temple, erected in classical antiquity by the worshippers of Mithras. Worshippers of Mithras had a complex system of seven grades of initiation and communal ritual meals. Initiates called themselves syndexioi, those "united by the handshake". They met in an underground temple, the so called Mithraeum. This Mithraeum was either a natural cave or cavern, or a building imitating a cave, that was adopted by the early christian builders to serve as a crypt for the newly build church above.

In antiquity the Mithraeum primarily functioned as an area for initiation, into which the soul descends and exits. The Mithraeum itself was arranged as an "image of the universe". It is noticed by some researchers that this practice, especially in the context of mithraic iconography, seems to stem from the neoplatonic concept that the "running" of the sun from solstice to solstice is a parallel for the movement of the soul through the universe, from pre-existence, into the body, and then beyond the physical body into an afterlife.

▴ Uppsala Cathedral

Uppsala Cathedral is the largest church building in Scandinavia, with its twin spires reaching over 118 meters into the sky. I had the privilege of seeing the imposing cathedral regularly, but capturing it shrouded in fog remains one of my favorite moments.

#Doorsday's child has far to go ... all the way to #Córdoba in fact.

This is a lovely old #door from the Mosque-Cathedral or #Mezquita with details of #MoorishArchitecture. In fact, it's one of the oldest surviving gates of the former mosque! The door's decoration dates back to 855 when it was known as Bab al-Wuzara ("Viziers' Gate"). Lots of Al-Andalus state officials used to enter the mosque here. The Great Mosque of Córdoba was converted into a Catholic #cathedral in the 13th century. It's a World Heritage Site since 1984.

Been inspired to make a little more progress on the #Minecraft #cathedral we're building.

It is based loosely on the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de #Chartres including the labyrinth which @solcita designed and rendered. The build was my primary coping mechanism in the earlier part of the pandemic and as spoons allow, @solcita and I continue on it just as the pandemic continues.

It's worth noting that this world is a Survival world, and all of the diorite used to construct this cathedral is mined by hand. The floor is made of half-block and lit at intervals from beneath with torches lending to the criss-cross pattern visible. This is in part to prevent the spawning of mobs.

I wanted the impossible forever project, and it has not disappointed. 🙂

Mentally, i'm here.
