NASA’s Lucy spacecraft beams back pictures of an asteroid shaped like a lumpy bowling pin.
From @AssociatedPress: "Lucy passed within 600 miles (960 kilometers) of the harmless asteroid known as Donaldjohanson on Sunday in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter."

A double scoop? Imagery from NASA's #Lucy spacecraft reveals that an #asteroid called #Donaldjohanson is a mooshed-together double space rock with a ridged structure in the middle that has been compared to a pair of nested ice cream cones. https://cosmiclog.com/2025/04/21/lucy-probe-snaps-closeup-of-weirdly-shaped-asteroid/ #Space #NASA
Meet Asteroid Donaldjohanson: Long and Lumpy
During a close flyby on April 20th, NASA’s Lucy spacecraft surprised its science team by revealing an asteroid that was once two smaller pieces that have been conjoined into a larger whole.

Asteroids are just giant space peanuts.
I know you see it too.

@spacegeck The Potato asteroid is 4.8 km in diameter, which apparently is "mid-sized." Spacereference.org has a handy graphic that uses Mount Everest as a reference. #potato #asteroid #space
"Asteroid 2025 HH flew past Earth at 0.07 LD — third closest of the year" by The Watchers - Newly-discovered #Asteroid #2025HH passed 27,847km/17,304mi on April 17, and was discovered April 18.
But there are circumstances in which giving an #asteroid a physical shove might not be enough to protect the #planet. If that’s the case, we could need another method, one that is notoriously difficult to test in real life: a #nuclear explosion. https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/04/14/1114306/space-nuclear-explosion-asteroid-protection-research/?utm_source=the_download&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=the_download.unpaid.engagement&utm_term=*%7CSUBCLASS%7C*&utm_content=*%7CDATE:m-d-Y%7C*

#AstroForge CEO Matt Gialich isn’t surprised the startup failed to reach its destination on its first #asteroid mission #Odin in February: https://payloadspace.com/a-post-mission-debrief-with-astroforges-ceo/ - in fact, don’t be surprised if the next spacecraft, set to launch with Intuitive Machine’s IM-3 this fall, fails too.
NASA doubles odds of Moon hitting Near-Earth Asteroid [2024 YR4].
"Experts at NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have updated [2024 YR4]’s chance of impacting the Moon on December 22, 2032 from 1.7 to 3.8 percent," the agency said.

@planet4589 : "When I was a kid , it was #LEO. Now, the frontier is out near the #asteroid belt, and the #Moon and #Mars are becoming part of where humanity just hangs out, maybe not yet as people, but with #robots. Meanwhile, #LEO is so normalized that it doesn’t take a #SpaceAgency to deal with it. You just call #SpaceX. Thousand years from now, perhaps more people live off Earth
than on it" https://www.cearkadia.edu.pl/jonathan-mcdowell-on-retiring-from-harvard-and-leaving-the-u-s
