Freedom of speech means accountability for the truth
When the media spreads false narratives about migration, it’s not just misinformation: it’s a win for those who have been criminalising solidarity and people on the move for years. Public discourse and opinion are built on these false and damaging news long before the truth can catch up.
The Louise Michel stands firm: freedom of speech comes with accountability for the truth. Newspapers have always been fundamental for speaking truth to power and for ensuring that people can have a correct and informed opinion on political issues. However, by using Pia Klemp’s past involvement in the Iuventa case to sensationalize the ship’s detention, they reinforced racist narratives and fueled a narrative of “illegality,” keeping solidarity under permanent trial even when courts rule in favor of NGOs.
We call on all people working in publications to uphold their dedication to the truth and stop feeding racist narratives against refugees and people on the move! Asylum is a human right. Freedom of movement should be a right for all!
