TIL'ed that you can't do letsencrypt wildcard certificates from a dynamic IP address because NameCheap requires updating allowed IPs from a web UI. Also, you will lose dynamic DNS records too. It seems like everything recommends CloudFlare these days, even Porkbun uses it under the hood. Any recommendations beyond CloudFlare? #selfhosting

I wrote out my #selfhosting #photos setup for my friend @ketumbra and thought it might be useful for some people here to help #boycottUSA #degoogle & leave #BigTech

Something that makes it clear how much value the #broligarchy can extract from your photos is this demo website from #ente @ente showing exactly how much #google extract about you and your family when you use their photo hosting on #googlephotos : theyseeyourphotos.com/

Now that I've set up a #selfhosting GoToSocial instance, let's start with an #introduction to the lovely #fediverse!

Thinking. Sketching. Writing. Crafting. Philosophy. Mental Models. Curiosity. Language. Variety.

My name is Axel Knauf, and I am an IT professional specialising in software development & architecture, service design with a focus on digital products & services, consulting and technical leadership. I’ve been working in the industry since 2005 and am usually staffed as tech lead and delivery principal on interdisciplinary software development teams.

Having started out as a tech-focused developer, I now love working with people, esp. as a facilitator in workshop / group settings.

There are so many topics I am interested in (see list above, it doesn't stop there), mostly driven by the desire to understand the world and people in a better way: From quantum field theory, through physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology up to its effects on the psyche, cognition and individual psychology and then further to group dynamics, social psychology, sociology and finally systems-thinking bringing it all together.

Oh, and did I mention astronomy? And art? And FLOSS? Linux? Hand-crafting? And heavy metal (music, not chemistry)? And artificial languages? And video games? And gardening? And fermentation? Baking sourdough bread? ..

As dire as times seem to be, this world is a splendid place to live in. And I am a radical optimist who believes in a bright future for mankind. Yes, this may be a little bit delusional nowadays. But if you zoom out and look at humanity's trajectory, you will see that just 150 years ago the average life would end after ~40 years, and 50% of children would die before the age of five.

There will be setbacks, there will be disruption and suffering. But there is also a silver lining and a bright future ahead of us (and I am not talking about AI). Let's build it together!

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 117 (Titanic edition) 🛥️

When I think of all my efforts, trials and tribulations with self-hosting my Ghost blog, the first thing that comes to mind is the animated GIF from the movie Titanic, with present-day Rose ruefully saying « It’s been 84 years ».

I keep a diary - a printed calendar with notes about my #selfhosting exploits - to keep track of milestones and progress. It turns out the first time I tried to self-host Ghost via #YunoHost was January 20th (that’s when I installed it on my Debian VPS). So not that long ago. But it does feel like 84 years LOL.

My latest obstacle was a frozen Mailgun account because they flagged me as a spammer the first time I tried to send a blog post as a newsletter.

My account has been fully reinstated (as of Friday evening) so hopefully things will go smoothly now.

Triple-checking Mailgun <-> Ghost configurations is not my ideal way to spend a Sunday morning, but I should take advantage of my parents looking after my little one. Let’s go 👩🏻‍💻

After six years of owning a server I finally put it on a UPS. My new residence has had more power outages in two years than my old residence of twelve years... Kinda freaked me out so I finally spent the money to be somewhat protected. #selfhosted #selfhosting

Wichtige Dokumente auf Papier haben? Ja, sollte man. Digitale Kopien davon haben? Ja, sollte man ebenso. #Selfhosting? Gute Sache.

Docker Compose:
docker-compose.archivebox.io

Since the subject came up I thought I would shill my #hosting company. They have 24/7 chat support so they are always there. They are 300% green.

I have the Premium plan which is $25/month, but that is one of their more expensive plans. It has unlimited domains and emails. I started on a cheaper plan that was only $15 a month, but that too has unlimited domains and emails. Plans start at $3/month. You can also upload #github scripts for #selfhosting.

Holy crap!
I really want to host my own email service, but I was just looking at mail-in-a-box and mailcow docs and it sound HARD! also the hardware requirements for mailcow are insane (8gb ram for 5-10 users? And 40gb space?)

Have been wanting to do this for a long time but these things are preventing me to.

Might do it when I have spare time and energy.
