David Leszcynski (he/him)<p>I woke up around 3:30 AM and haven’t been able to stop thinking about the <a href="https://hoosier.social/tags/Idaho" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Idaho</span></a> challenge to <a href="https://hoosier.social/tags/SameSexMarriage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SameSexMarriage</span></a>. I’m beyond angry. I’m furious and outraged. It won’t take long for that legal challenge to reach the <a href="https://hoosier.social/tags/SupremeCourt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SupremeCourt</span></a> and for the <a href="https://hoosier.social/tags/GOP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GOP</span></a> to overturn <a href="https://hoosier.social/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a> and then we’re back where we started. I knew this would happen and this is one moment where I hate that I’m right.</p>

Aquarius Otter<p>At some point the federal government will have to set up its own (voluntary) marriage certificate, IMO. And it’s own (voluntary) free ID card for civilians. </p><p><a href="https://queer.party/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a>’s obeisance to the states regarding the performance of marriages, just like the feds’ reliance on the states to carry out <a href="https://queer.party/tags/voterregistration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>voterregistration</span></a> which killed the <a href="https://queer.party/tags/ForthePeopleAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ForthePeopleAct</span></a>, or <a href="https://queer.party/tags/Obamacare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Obamacare</span></a>’s reliance on states to expand <a href="https://queer.party/tags/Medicaid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Medicaid</span></a>, leaves many in the lurch and at the mercy of their own state governments.</p>
Aquarius Otter<p><a href="https://queer.party/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a> is a delayed codification of the further dismantling of <a href="https://queer.party/tags/partussequiturventrem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>partussequiturventrem</span></a>. And yet it is still not enough, IMO. There is still more to do in dismantling this <a href="https://queer.party/tags/apartheid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>apartheid</span></a> method.</p>
Aquarius Otter<p><a href="https://queer.party/tags/LovingVVirginia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LovingVVirginia</span></a> may have been decided in 1967, but it took until 2000 for the US Census to allow residents to select multiple ethnicities. It took until 2010 for the census to count same-sex households. <a href="https://queer.party/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/InterracialMarriage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>InterracialMarriage</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/RespectForMarriageAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RespectForMarriageAct</span></a></p>
Winjay<p>My niece, who's trans, can marry anyone she wants now. The Federal government is guaranteeing that with The Respect For Marriage Act <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a>. States might still fight it, but now there's nothing to stop her. Her grandparents couldn't have believed this would happen in their lifetimes. Their marriage was not possible in some states when they were young.</p>

Winjay<p>My grandmother never saw her father again because of racist laws. She was deported to the U.S. with her mother while her father was forced to stay in Canada. The racist laws wanted to put them on a reserve, but they were mixed. Added to that were the U.S. laws on who was allowed to marry who; it drove them crazy not to know Metis people's blood quanta, so they could remove their marriage from the equation. </p><p>The <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a> could have kept my family together.</p>
Winjay<p>My parents never talked about it, but they knew their marriage would not be recognized in every state. My father's tribal affiliation was not always recognized, when it comes down to it. And my mother, sometimes she was "white" under local law. Sometimes she was not. The <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a> at least recognizes the stupidity of racism governing marriage laws.</p>
Winjay<p>The Respect for Marriage Act is so little, so late...but it's better than nothing. <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a></p>
Aquarius Otter<p>Pretty interesting write-up on the correlation between anti-slavery abolitionism and its correlations to votes on interracial marriage and the Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA): <a href="https://charlesohalloranboyd.wordpress.com/2022/12/11/abolitionism-fair-housing-and-marriage-equality-a-study-in-correlation/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">charlesohalloranboyd.wordpress</span><span class="invisible">.com/2022/12/11/abolitionism-fair-housing-and-marriage-equality-a-study-in-correlation/</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/RespectForMarriageAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RespectForMarriageAct</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/ssm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ssm</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/lgbt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lgbt</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/samesexmarriage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>samesexmarriage</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/interracialmarriage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>interracialmarriage</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/civilrights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>civilrights</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/humanrights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>humanrights</span></a> <a href="https://queer.party/tags/uspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>uspol</span></a></p>

MrCopilot<p>So you got aides together in rooms, hashed it all out and decided to go with "sex"?</p><p>I'm sure that will be universally celebrated by all. :eyeroll: </p><p>I mean bang on for getting 60+ to vote on anything beside adjourning for the weekend, let alone something progressive like decades old settled precedents that shoulda done been laws. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/DOMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DOMA</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/RFMA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RFMA</span></a></p>
