Mastodon BlogBringing Quote Posts to Mastodon
More from Mastodon

I personally can't wait for quote posts because I usually use them to post a comment on information that I'm looking at - specifically, news about new shows, games, media in general.

Quoting the source is easier and makes me feel better because people will see where it came from right away without having to open an extra link. #QuotePosts #Fedi #Mastodon

I get that #quoteposts are often used to dunk on people. To take someone's post and place yours above it to say they are an idiot. That sucks.

But I don't care so much about quoting "posts". I want to share articles, podcast episodes and videos with a comment re why it's awesome. And while we can do that, someday all of those things should also be natively fedi content. And when I do this kind of QP, it should count as a boost. That's what I want. #SocialWeb

Does that make sense? #QuoteBoosts?

[I'm already hating myself for even bothering to beat this damned dead horse again]

"Making quote posts opt-in basically means that it will be hardly ever used, so why even bother investing all the time to develop it in the first place?"

#QuotePosts on #Mastodon have been made opt-in (the user decides whether their posts may be quote posted or not) thus preventing (as the most prevalent example) the dog-piling by armies of angry misogynist incel males who used to broadcaast a woman's post to a cc list of their angry misogynist incel male 'brothers' so the bros could execute a wholesale assault

I witnessed this scores of times on Twitter

You missed it? Or didn't care?

None of this may concern you, but at least #Gargron and the Mastodon devs had the sense to make their concerns known (what? two years ago?) and not just rush in to unleashing this weapon on demand

The 'demand' coming from 99% males, not surprisingly

You can still quote post; just opt-out from any controls, or don't use them

Because there's no #quoteposts feature on #Mastodon, I will sometimes reply to others' toots with quotes from a link they posted about, or make a statement that links to their original post. I'm not directly replying to them specifically, but want to amplify their post/toot with additional msging beyond just boosting.

Was checking the news!

Quote Posts...I hope it will turn out okay as long as I can choose what I quote...

Mastodon will add Quote Posts, even though some Users don’t want Them. :mastodon:

Mastodon is making a change that might have some users divided. In an update, the decentralized platform announced that it’s working to add quote posts “to help people to transition away from proprietary, billionaire-owned social media to the open social web”.

Im also confused due to two primary reasons. 1) Most of the other #fediverse microblogging platforms have long had quote posts, is there any research and evidence to support that the Fediverse is more toxic due to these platforms? 2) The real vector of abuse on #Mastodon is Private Mention (PM) it has long been criticised and laid out by Black and Brown folks, I guess that’s why it falls on deaf ears and non of the Mastodon team made any blogposts discussing them getting rid of the feature. I also fail to see any anti quote users be passionate about abolishing PM. Also, if #QuotePosts are the reason for harassment and toxicity then what has Mastodon’s issues for years with harassment, racism, toxicity etc as those exist without #QuoteToots

Here's the thing about #QuotePosts - it doesn't matter what #Mastodon does, how much they "thought about" it, how "smart" they were with making an "abuse-proof" system, because client apps already do them, and your client app IS your Mastodon experience.

The most important thing a client app can do, with respect to quote posts, is ignore the official guidelines, and keep doing things the way they were doing things.
