De Heem. A Table of Desserts, 1640.
Matissee. Variation on a Still Life by de Heem, 1915.

Matisse thought so much of the original that he painted a reduced copy in 1893, sold it, then bought it back, and finally made a full size homage in his own style.

Pronk in the first place evokes volumes of discussion regarding value, capitalism, ostentation, hedonism, divine blessings, work ethic. But what does "dessert" mean when reinterpreted twice over in a modern style during WW1 in Paris?

A Dutch Golden Age pronk painting in hyperrealism style with every detail gloriously rendered in the ideal. A table is heaped with luxurious ostentatious bounty like goldplate and a lute and fresh fruit
Matisse's 1915 modern interpretation of the earlier painting which shows influence from cubism/purism. Possibly of most interest is the simplification and extrapolation of each element.

This image has remained in my mind's eye for years. I was going to write that it was the visual equivalent of an earworm, but that wouldn't be quite right, as that term suggests something annoying of which one would be glad to be rid.

The image depicts an 18th century painting featuring two central figures. On the left, the muscular, bearded figure of Neptune with a trident on his back is emptying a cornucopia like shell overflowing with coins. He is shirtless, with a stern expression, and his body is partially turned towards a female figure on the right who personifies Venice. Adorned with a crown and a luxurious ermine robe with an orange lining, Venice is pointing at Neptune, indicating a moment of interaction. She is seated on a richly draped fabric adding to the regal atmosphere. The background is a deep blue, enhancing the dramatic effect of the scene. The painting is rich in detail, with a focus on the textures of the clothing and the coins, and the interplay of light and shadow adds depth to the composition.

Welp, here is a random photo of the finished milkweed and monarch.

I am very happy to have this piece behind me, but I feel ambivalent about its appearance, atm. Perhaps I just feel brain dead but at least I don't hate it (yet).

I will probably touch it up somewhat, but I looks fine. It's much more radiant IRL but I can't seem to capture the colors in a file.

Cameras do not like contrasting color juxtapositions, it seems. This photo reminds me of so many other photographs, especially of grid pieces, that look like their made of maybe ten colors, but when seen IRL it's obvious there are so many more.

And the brain performs a plethora of brain tricks too, some known and some unknown, and I can never be sure which is which.

Anyway, part of the idea was to hide the subject matter too, and keep the piece in the abstract genre.

Half disappearing monarch, half disappearing art, half disappearing observer.
