Just a few hundred meters away from us, a Shahed drone struck an open area along the Dnipro River, in the city of Dnipro. We immediately put on our protective vests. Moments later, we were talking with a group of young people about how lucky it was that no people or homes had been hit in that first strike.<br>But while we were standing there, we saw air defense systems go into action in the distance. But never this close, never this intense… The world needs to know: the vast majority of Shahed, drone, and guided missile attacks that land away from the front lines hit civilian targets. We visited several of the affected sites last night – and all of them were right in the middle of residential neighborhoods.<br>And still, today we “just” continue our humanitarian work. Pokrovsk is only 25 km from the front line, with almost daily bombardments.<br>We felt very sorry for the people who had waited for us. But we quickly ran into a technical problem: the ventilation system wasn’t working. Without a functioning extractor – an essential part of the security system – we couldn’t turn on the fryer. No ventilation, no fries.<br>We tried everything to get the system running. As time passed, the line of waiting people grew, and so did the stress. Staying in one place for too long this close to the front is not a good idea. In the end, we had to give up and decided to hand out candy and treats instead of frying fries. A bitter disappointment for the hundreds of people who had been looking forward to a warm snack.<br>Just as we announced that we would return next week, the problem suddenly seemed to be fixed.
