I understand Kevin Powell referenced my 2020 post “Alternative Text for CSS Generated Content” in his video on what’s new with CSS and that he deferred to my testing results. My December 2024 update is the most recent:

TL;DR: Use `<img>` for icons & similar, but for non-interactive decorative contexts that don’t need auto-translation, then alternative text on CSS generated content can get the job done.

Adrian Roselli · Alternative Text for CSS Generated ContentAs of December 2024, you should prefer using <img> for icons and the like, but for non-interactive decorative contexts that don’t need auto-translation, then alternative text on CSS generated content can get the job done. Even if Safari does some interesting things with it. Relying on images that come from…

holy shit y'all, we finally hit 1k followers!! 😭

i never thought i'd get here when i started this account around 11 months ago. mastodon literally pulled me out of a deep fucking hole when i was dealing with depression and some tough stuff irl. but i found actual real friends here, found purpose, and honestly? this place changed my whole life. not being dramatic, it's been a critical part of my journey.

so yeah, thanks for following me and my chaotic life. oh and supporting altbot too (now at 3.4k users?! wtf). wild.

and to celebrate hitting 1k, i'm dropping something i've been working on:

  1. introducing the #UnseenImageChallenge - post black squares with detailed alt text to experience social media like screen reader users do. check out micr0.dev/unseenChallenge/ for all the details!
  2. also launching a comprehensive alt text guide at micr0.dev/alttext/ with examples, tips, and everything you need to write better image descriptionslet's make fedi more accessible together. this community gave me so much, and this is my way of giving back.

daily challenge themes start today. monday is nature & outdoors! who's in?

📢 Introducing the #UnseenImageChallenge! 📢
What if everyone experienced social media the way screen reader users do? Let's find out together!

Visit our challenge website for more information and examples: micr0.dev/unseenChallenge

What Is It?

Post a solid black square image with detailed alt text describing what would have been there. Everyone will "see" the same way screen reader users see the post! This powerful exercise demonstrates why accessible content matters.

How To Participate:

  1. Choose a meaningful image based on the daily theme
  2. Replace it with a plain black square in your post
  3. Write a vivid, detailed description as the alt text
  4. Use the hashtag #UnseenImageChallenge
  5. Nominate 3 friends to join the challenge

Need Help With Alt Text?

Not sure how to write good descriptions? We've created a comprehensive alt text guide at micr0.dev/alttext with examples, tips, and even an interactive quality checker!

You can also DM me the original image, and I'll help generate alt text you can use! (Make sure you are following me first! Mastodon blocks 'unsolicited' DMs!)

Example: Instead of "My cat" try "My orange tabby cat Whiskers lounging in a sunbeam on the windowsill, looking sleepy with half-closed eyes"

Daily Themes:

  • Monday: Nature & Outdoors
  • Tuesday: Pets & Animal Friends
  • Wednesday: Art & Creativity
  • Thursday: Food & Cuisine
  • Friday: Places & Spaces
  • Saturday: People & Portraits
  • Sunday: Wild Card (anything you choose!)

Duration

The challenge runs for one full week! Join in on any or all of the daily themes.

Community Showcase

I'll be boosting exceptional examples throughout the week and featuring creative descriptions. Your participation helps inspire others!

Supporting the Mission

If you find value in this challenge and want to support Altbot's continued development and accessibility work, you can contribute to the project at ko-fi.com/micr0byte. All funds go directly toward server costs, development, and expanding our accessibility initiatives. However, awareness and participation are the most important contributions!

Why This Matters

Every day, blind and low-vision people experience the Fediverse entirely through alt text. This challenge helps everyone understand why detailed image descriptions are so important first hand. Awareness is important!

Resources

The challenge begins today! Who's ready to make the Fediverse more accessible while trying something new? Make sure to tag three friends who you think should join in!

I don't mind if hourly $thing bot maintainers don't want to bother with image descriptions. I'm also not upset with people in general not bothering even tho that will make me not repost.

But people that will maliciously include misleading and/or useless descriptions in their posts can go to hell.

If you don't want to bother, just be honest and own that you don't care.

Its cheating people that look out for alt texts and it's just a middle finger for #blind users.

Hey #WritingCommunity Did you know that there exists an organisation called Bookshare that makes books accessible for people who have whatever problems to read the written word? I have learned about them from @Fragglemuppet and donated my epub to them.
(They are permitted to do what they are doing by U.S. copyright law because they only make the files available in accessible formats for people who fall under the ADA, but of course, if you donate your files you got a higher chance of bringing your writing to their brains)
