Here's some #FungiFriday news:
In Hungary we have an online vote every year for Fungus of the Year.
The 2023 vote just concluded, and it seems like the 2023 Fungus of the Year will be the Gomphus clavatus (a.k.a. pig's ears).
It beat the citron amanita and the pine bolete.
(We also have votes for Mineral of the Year, Bird of the Year, Wildflower, Butterfly, Fish, Insect, etc. I live for these votes.)

@TarkabarkaHolgy
Is there some central start point of the somethings of the year?
@grin Yeah, various organizations announce the candidates, such as the Hungarian Mycology Society.
@TarkabarkaHolgy Szerinted hogy lehetne őket összeszedni? Csak kézzel, egyenként?
@grin Én úgy szoktam
@TarkabarkaHolgy https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szerkesztő:Grin/Éves_kiválasztóversenyek
Ezeket találtam eddig, amik érdekesek voltak. (A magánkezdeményezéseken és ötfős szavazásokon kívül.)
@grin
@TarkabarkaHolgy awesome! In New Zealand we have a Bird of the Year vote organised by Forest and Bird, a local conservation agency.
It gets quite fun and sometimes controversial, recently the winner was a bat, for example.
@pezmico Yeah I think I remember the bat controversy Is the vote usually at the end of the year?
@TarkabarkaHolgy it's usually October.
A few years ago it was lots of fun because the campaign teams were making lots of ridiculous memes for their candidate birds, and even forming alliances.
Famously the penguin bloc allying together to face up the favourites managed to get one of their penguins to win.
Lately it has been a bit more muted, perhaps because actual politics have been more exhausting.
@grin I'll take the blame :)
@TarkabarkaHolgy I am very envious of your country.
@jr Lol that's something I don't hear very often...
@TarkabarkaHolgy if these weren’t the inspiration for the Soul Husks in Skyrim, I’d be legitimately shocked.
